FAQ Frequently asked questions on how to care for your jewelry, our warranties, and insurance.
Q) Can I work out with my rings on? If not, why? A) No, please do not work out while wearing your rings. The weights will scratch the shank of the ring and if you hit it just right, you could loosen the diamonds. You can also bend the shanks into an oval. I always suggest that girls wear a little platinum chain (it could even be gold or silver) and when you are doing things that could hurt your ring (like working out or moving furniture) slip the ring on the chain. That way it is close to your heart and it won't get lost or damaged. Also, never wear jewelry in chlorinated water (pools, hot tubs) because the chemical can break down karat gold and damage soft gemstones like pearls and emeralds.
Q) Can I shower with my jewelry on? A) You can shower with you jewelry on, but showering with it will get soap under the diamonds. Personally, I never shower with any of my jewelry on. When I am finished showering in the morning. I "lotion up" get dressed and put on my jewelry just before leaving the house. This way they are always cleaner and looking great. It wont hurt however, to shower in them, they just won't look as nice.
Q) Can I sleep with my jewelry on? A) NEVER sleep with your jewelry on. There is more damage done to rings while sleeping that during the day. I have had to cut off at least 5 rings off girls who smashed their rings while sleeping and the rings got so mis-shaped that they couldn't get them off. Amazing--but true.
Q) I am assuming I should take my rings off to do all cleaning...is that true? A) Yes it is true. Best to take off your beautiful rings while cleaning. Your rings are durable but not indestructible. It is like a silk dress or a Mercedes compared to jeans or a rent-a wreck! Would you clean your house in a silk dress? 50 years ago women never wore diamonds during the day; they only wore them in the evening. This is why there are so many beautiful antique rings in excellent condition. It has been our rush-rush generation that thinks that jewelry is indestructible and can be worn 24/7. The better we treat our jewelry, the longer it will last!
Q) What about the diamond itself, I have heard of a diamond cracking, is this one guaranteed against that? A) A diamond is VERY difficult to break but not impossible. It has to be hit with extreme force to break or chip it. Diamonds with pointy corners (princess cuts, marquise and pear shapes) are more vulnerable to chipping or breaking. They have very thin points that can be broken off if hit with force, although it’s still pretty rare. Also, diamonds of lower clarity (SI3, I1, I2, I3) could break it they are hit on an inclusion, although it’s still doubtful.
Q) What about the little diamonds on the side? A) These can break if you don’t care for your rings properly, especially if you NEVER take your rings off. Again, it’s VERY rare to have this happen. Occasionally I have had pave's set diamonds (the side diamonds) fall out when the ring has been hit and becomes misshapen. Also very rare, but fortunately this can be replaced for very little money.
Q) If the diamond were to fall out is there any kind of guarantee, meaning would you put it back in for me? A) There are no warranties on diamonds or gem stones since 99.9% of all damage is owner inflected. This is why it is very important to have your ring insured. If you hit your ring and either damage or lose the stone, you would be covered. You can have a rider on your home owner's insurance to cover any damage or loss. We also recommend that you bring your jewelry into our store at least once a year for a professional cleaning and evaluation. If there are any loose stones they can be tightened before they fall out.
Q) Do you recommend getting special insurance for the ring or do most people just have it covered under their home owner's insurance? A) I recommend getting insurance on any item over $1000. You can get your ring insured through your home owner’s or renter’s policy. Of you don't have a policy, or if you don’t want to change the rates on your home owner’s policy, you can insure it with Jewelers Mutual. You can go to their website to check rates and fill out an application. I can also send you information on this if you would like.
